Captain America – The Winter Soldier: How Far Would You go for Your BFF?

If you like films that elegantly balance action and story, Captain America – The Winter Soldier is the perfect pick for you. Amidst all the jaw-dropping fight scenes and priceless Marvel humour, it’s a tale about childhood friends finding themselves on different sides of a war.

What’s it about? When S.H.I.E.L.D director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is attacked by a mysterious assassin, supersoldier Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) teams up with elite-gymnast and fellow Avenger Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) and a guy he met while he was out running (Anthony Mackie) to protect his country and the freedom of its people.

What’s it really about? The unbreakable bond between two men who were like brothers.

Pick if:

  • You’re looking for an entertaining movie to watch on a date, preferably one that elegantly balances action and story
  • You’re a fan of comic book movies
  • Black Widow is your favourite Avenger: Natasha is arguably the most important character in the film – never mind its title
  • Buckyyyy
    Buckyyy!

You’re a sucker for portrayals of friendships that run deeper than blood: the brotherly bond between Bucky and Steve will move you to tears

  • You loved the first Captain America movie: this one is even better.
  • You hated the first Captain America movie: this one is so good, it pays off to have seen the first one.
  • You haven’t seen the first Captain America movie: The Winter Soldier will fill you in on all the important bits of Steve’s back story you need to know in order to follow the plot.
  • You appreciate close-ups of pretty faces: Evans, Stan, Mackie and Johansson are all extremely easy on the eyes.

Funniest quotes from Steve and Natasha:

  1. Natasha Romanoff (giving Steve a lift): Hey, fellas. Either one of you know where the Smithsonian is? I’m here to pick up a fossil.
    Steve Rogers: That’s hilarious.
  2. Natasha Romanoff: Where did Captain America learn to steal a car?
Steve Rogers: Nazi Germany. And we’re borrowing. Get your feet off the dash.
  3. Natasha Romanoff: Alright, I have a question for you, of which you do not have to answer. I feel like if you don’t answer it though, you’re kind of answering it, you know?
Steve Rogers: What?Natasha Romanoff: Was that your first kiss since 1945?Steve Rogers: That bad, huh?
Natasha Romanoff: I didn’t say that.Steve Rogers: Well, it kind of sounds like that’s what you’re saying.

Most memorable scene: **********SPOILER****************

The Winter Soldier and Captain America face-off: Steve hasn’t given up hope that Bucky will recognise him. When his former friend has him pinned down, Steve tells him to finish his mission, because he isn’t going to fight him, asserting, “I’m with you til the end of the line”, something Bucky once said to him *gross sobbing*.
