23-year-old Moritz Künkel is a huge fan of anything that carries Shonda Rhimes’ signature. In fact, he’s dedicated his blog “Follow the Rhimes” to all things Shondaland. If you want the latest scoop on upcoming episodes, or what the cast is up to when they’re not filming, Moritz has you covered. I spoke to him about his favourite episodes and what makes the shows work in his opinion…

1. What makes How to get away with Murder so compelling?
The way the story unfolds gradually through the two timelines until they catch up with each other. You just can’t wait to see how it plays out.

2. You also blog about Grey’s Anatomy. Why do you think it’s still on the air after 11 seasons?
Because Shonda Rhimes is doing a terrific job as showrunner: the casting and storytelling are outstanding. Although Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) is the principal protagonist, the show offers a myriad of other characters the audience can identify with – everybody can pick their own personal favourite. For me it used to be Izzie (Katherine Heigl) and George (T.R. Knight) because they had a great dynamic in the earlier seasons.

After they left I became more invested in Meredith and most recently, her half-sister Maggie (Kelly McCreary). Moreover, the show is set in a hospital, so it is guaranteed to be full of drama and big emotions. It’s very impressive the way the writers manage to create patients that you can relate to and grow fond of over a short period of time. Ultimately, I think the secret to the show’s success lies with its perfect blend of drama, romance and comedy.

3. Which episodes of Grey‘s have been your favourites?
There are so many!  A definite highlight would have to be the two-part season 6 finale: the shooting at Seattle Grace Hospital. It’s got everything you want from an episode – a real emotional rollercoaster.

Furthermore, I was very impressed by an episode from Season 12 which is currently airing on ABC: the attack on Meredith (read Moritz’ full review (in German) here))! Ellen Pompeo gives a spectacular performance in this episode and the director -Hollywood-star Denzel Washington- demonstrates a real talent for nuanced storytelling.
