Dutch sex workers, English hooligans and touchy feely Italians: Eurotrip is a 90 minute journey into American ignorance about Europe and its people. This travel comedy is offensive on so many levels, but I’ll be damned if it didn’t make me laugh out loud.
Eurotrip (2004): Directed by Jeff Schafer; running-time 1h 33mins.; starring Scott Mechlowitz (Waiting for forever), Jacob Pitts (21), Michelle Trachtenberg (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Travis Wester, Jessica Boehrs (Sturm der Liebe), Kristin Kreuk (Smallville), Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting), Fred Armisen (SNL), Lucy Lawless (Xena), Jana Pallaske (Männerherzen), Walter Sitler (Nikola), Vinnie Jones (Galavant).
What’s it about? When highschool-graduate Scottie (Mechlowitz) gets dumped by his long-term girlfriend (Kreuk), he and his best friend (Pitts), along with twins Jenny and Jamie (Trachtenberg, Wester) travel to Europe to find his pen pal Mieke (Boehrs) – naturally, chaos and confusion ensues…
What’s it really about? American stereotypes about Europe.
- You’re looking for a silly comedy to watch on a Date Night or with your group of friends
- You’re not easily offended by stereotypes: I actually watched this film with a group of international high school students and we had a great laugh about it
- You’ve ever wanted to go on a eurotrip yourself
- You’ve ever gotten into trouble traveling with a group or friends
- You enjoyed Road Trip or Old School
Most memorable quote:
“You know America was founded by prudes. Prudes who left Europe because they hated all the kinky, steamy European sex that was going on. And now I, Cooper Harris, will return to the land of my perverted forefathers and claim my birthright… which is a series of erotic and sexually challenging adventures.”
Most memorable scene:
It’s bad enough that to be dumped by your girlfriend on graduation day, but finding out that she’s been cheating on for a long time with the singer of a punk-rock band through a song about the details of said cheating at your graduation party is a whole nother level of rough.
Where can I watch? Eurotrip is available for streaming on Amazon, Netflix Germany, Maxdome, and iTunes.
