One Day: A Wonderfully Normal Love Story That Will Make You Cry

If you like films where close friends pine for each other for years before they eventually become lovers, One Day is the perfect pick for you! Based on David Nicholls bestselling novel, this romantic drama tells the story of Dexter and Emma whose lives intersect every year on July 15th, the day they met.

What’s it about? One Day chronicles the friendship between Dexter (Jim Sturgess) and Emma by catching up with them on the same day each year (July 15th, the day they met).

What’s it really about? Some people are meant to stay in our lives forever.

My friend Charlotte has recommended a lot of great films, tv shows and songs to me over the years. But the most rewarding recommendation she has given me was to read David Nicholls novel “One Day”, which, incidentally, I finished in the very time span suggested in the title.  It’s a heartwarming tale of friendship, loss, forgiveness and love whose unique narrative style pulls you in and doesn’t let go, even after you’ve finished the book.

Usually when a book affects me this much, I am weary when it is turned into a movie. But to my utmost delight, One Day was true to the characters and did a great job of translating their story onto the screen. Here’s why the romantic drama is well worth a watch.

Pick if:

  • You’re looking for a romance film that does not pretend to be an epic love story: nothing is at stake here, except for the characters’ personal development and happiness – and it turns out that’s compelling enough
  • You like romances that spring from a close friendship such as Love Rosie, What if, or When Harry met Sally
  • You want to see endearing acting performances: Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess do a wonderful job (never mind her faccent) of bringing Emma and Dexter to life and really manage to tap into their essence, their dreams and insecurities
  • You’re in the mood for a film that will make you cry: have tissues ready!

Most memorable scene: Dexter and Emma get into a fight while they’re out having dinner. Emma runs out of the restaurant and when Dexter follows her, she tearfully tells him: “I love you Dexter, I just don’t like you anymore” before walking away.

Most memorable quote: “Whatever happens tomorrow, we’ve had today” – Emma

Where can I watch? One Day is available on Amazon and Netflix.
